Many of you who have been practicing yoga for some time may already know that yoga isn’t just about exercise and flexibility. One of my favourite quotes says it perfectly "Yoga is not about touching your toes, it is what you learn on the way down"- Jigar Gor. We learn many things through exploring what our bodies can do in the asanas and through vinyasa (syncing movement and breath) we help to balance our bodies and minds. Working through pranayama (breath control) and meditation we may add a whole new level of experience to our practice.
However, one of the less mentioned aspects to a holistic yoga practice is
Karma yoga. Karma Yoga comes from the Sanskrit term meaning “action” or “deed.” Therefore, it is the action of selfless service towards others. For the next 4 weeks I will be focussing my own practice around karma yoga and I would like to encourage you to do the same.
Let me introduce Freeset (freesetglobal.com). Freeset is an ethical clothing company based in Sonagachi,
West Bengal that provides alternative employment for hundreds of women forced into prostitution by sex trafficking and poverty. They provide new jobs and empower women with the life-skills needed to appreciate freedom and provide support for them to find new homes and community.
Particularly as a woman I feel so lucky to have been born in the Western world and to have been blessed with the opportunities I have been given. So for the next 4 weeks I will not be charging class fees for any Octopus Yoga class in the hope that you will donate to Freeset instead. You can donate directly through their website (as listed above) or I will be passing around a collection bag during class time, you can also donate via online banking through Octopus Yoga (as you would for a normal class- just insert the reference Freeset, 100% of these transactions will be donated to freeset).
So please come along to a class and enjoy the relaxation knowing you are also supporting hundreds of women on a path to freedom.
